In my opinion, the best steel alloys for beginners are 1084, 15N20, 5160, 80CrV2 or 8670. All these steels are much easier to heat treat than 1095 and O1. I do not recommend O1 for beginning knifemakers unless you have a heat treating oven or will send your blades out for heat treating.

- Three Ferox Rangers in 80crv2 fresh out of heat treatment straight as an arrow and with minimal decarburization. Only washed and lightly scrubbed with a scotch bright pad to remove oil after heat treatment.

  • Jun 04, 2013 · I've forged a lot with the HC RR spikes, but haven't done much with heat treating high carbon steel. This is my first knife from an old Nicholson file (I've made many letter openers from spikes) Both the knife and sharpened scrap piece were heated to critical temp, quenched in motor oil and then tempered over stove burner.

    1095 Cro-Van(Sharon Steel) - Based on 1095 steel, with the addition of small amounts of V, Mo, Ni, Cr. Improved wear resistance and toughness compared to 1095. Ka-Bar and Bark river use this steel in their knives.

  • These days, Damascus is more about aesthetics than performance. Go back 1000 years or so, and Damascus (which is completely different than the stuff that bears that name today, look up Wootz for more info) *may* have offered some advantages over competing European steels.

  • Lie-Nielsen used to offer both O1 and A2 for their planes. As they explained it, the O1 was ground at 25 degrees and gave a sharper edge but would need to be sharpened more often. The angle for the A2 was limited to 30 degrees, didn't give as sharp of edge and was harder to sharpen. However the edge lasted far longer then the O1.
