Sep 20, 2010 · Dan, is the port issue only on the 385 series???? I know I don't have that issue with the sbf motors don, as far as i know they only changed the 385 series heads when they went to efi. for some damn reason they always had issues with getting them to pass emissions, and iirc that was a major part of the head change.

  • The older style heads like the small block Ford, Chrysler, and 23 degree Small Block Chevys have difficult short turn curves for a CNC machine to get in there and mill properly to the correct curve shape. So far, I have been very successful in gaining more horsepower and torque by further hand-porting heads that were previously CNC'd.

  • The only reliable fix is to go with aftermarket products. As far as I know Ford never fessed up to what is a design problem. Do a search on the Ford 460 engine and you'll find hundreds of posts about that and the bad in-tank fuel pump on the F53 frames. Ford did admit this one but never issued a recall.

  • Ford was looking for a higher output small block though. The first attempt with the 302 was the "tunnel port". Copied from the 427 NASCAR heads, the intake push rods ran through a small tube in the head, surrounded by huge intake ports and valves. The motors were used in the Trans Am/Series II racing with mild success.
